Penguins 6 Flames 2 in Winter League Championship Game

2010 Winter League Championship game saw the 1 seed Penguins take on the 2 seed Flames. In their first matchup of the season the Flames got the 1 goal victory in a high scoring contest winning 9-8. But the Penguins would win the season series taking the next two meeting 6-3 and 10-6, no shortage of offense between these two teams…

The puck drops and and the two teams traded scoring chances in the early minutes. The Penguins would get on the board first when Filipe DaSilva stuffs home a rebound at 12:54 of the first period. A mere :20 seconds later Dave Ford gave the Penguins an early 2-0 lead when his shot beat Flames goaltender Luis Galvao on the glove side. Jim Koehler would score the Penguins 3rd goal of the first period when he hopped out of the penalty box stepping in to loose puck for a breakaway. The Penguins were firmly in control with a 3-0 lead after one period.

The Flames did get on the scoreboard in the second period, but not before Jim Koehler increased the Penguins lead to 4-0 when he finished a great pass from Matt Casserly. Ross Bergen scored the first goal for the Flames, beating Penguins goalie Glenn McCaffrey after a nice feed from Aaron Johnson. With the Penguins up 4-1 it was Jim Koehler who struck again for his 3rd of the game, his Hat Trick giving the Penguins a solid 5-1 lead heading into the final period.

In the third period the Flames come out flying, determined to get back into this game. It paid off, less then 3 minutes in the Flames would cut the lead to 5-2, Stewart Solomon getting the goal, assisted by Andrew Fox. Despite the effort and the Flames out-shooting the Penguins 11-7 in the final period, 5-2 was as close as they would get. With 1:02 left to play Ian Dargon put the nail in the coffin as he scored for the Penguins to make it 6-2, the games final score.

Penguins win the 2010 Winter Draft League Championship.

Double congrats goes out to Jim Koehler, Colin Haviland and Glenn McCaffery as former members of Team Royal that won the Fall Championship they become the first players to win back to back league titles.
