February 24, 2010 by NateIn the first game of Monday’s double header, the Penguins broke a time game open in the third period to take home the win 10-6. The first period was a high scoring, but tightly played period which saw the Penguins strike first when Colin Haviland was able to beat Flames goaltender Luis Galvao with help from Jim Koehler and Tim Carter at 9:50. The Flames would take the lead on two goals in a minute with the first going to Alex Garceau from Pete McCarthy and the second going to Rodney Tortorich from Alex Garceau and Mike Hoye. The Penguins answered right back with three of their own in the span of two minutes from Tim Carter (assist: Colin Haviland), Jim Koehler (assist: Ulrich Suter), and Andrew Garnitz (assists: Michael Lerra and Tim Carter). The Flames would draw within one by the end of the period when Alex Garceau scored (assists: Andrew Fox and Mike Hoye) with 0:37 left on the clock, putting the score at 4-3, Penguins.
The offense calmed down a bit during second period despite the fact that the teams each had a powerplay during the frame. The first goal of the period came from the Pens at 12:10 when Jim Koehler (assist: Matt Casserly) scored while teammate Michael Lerra was in the penalty box. The Flames would answer back at 9:51 when Ross Bergen finished on a nice setup by teammates Jared Marshall and Andrew Fox. The Flames would score a shorty of their own at 0:36 when Alex Garceau (assist: Jim Doyle) was able to beat penguins goalie Glenn McCaffrey while teammate Andrew Fox was serving time for a tripping minor, leaving it as a tie game 5-5 at the end of two periods.
The third saw the Penguins pour it on, scoring twice in a minute and a half with unassisted goals from Dave Ford and Jime Koehler. The Flames were able to get one back under a minute later when Andrew Fox (assists: Jared Marshall and Ross Bergen) was able to beat Glenn McCaffrey. However, the Penguins proved to be too much for the Flames, finishing out the game with three more goals, the first from Jim Koehler (assists: Ulrich Suter and Matt Casserly), followed by one from Dave Ford (assist: Filipe DaSilva), and capped off by Koehler’s fifth goal (unassisted) to put the final score at 10-6.
