Haviland and Koehler each score twice as Penguins hand Flames 6-3 loss

The Penguins and Flames met for the second time this season last night, having played to a 9-8 Flames win the first time out we were anticipating another high scoring affair. Instead the teams combined for only 9 goals and this time the Penguins would skate to the victory. Hopping over the Flames in the league standings in the process. The Penguins took an early 1-0 lead on a Jim Koehler goal, the only goal of the surprisingly low scoring first period. Both goaltenders had solid showings, Glenn McCaffrey making 40 saves for the Penguins while Luis Galvao had 29 saves for the Flames on the night.

In the second period the Flames tied the score at 1-1 when Jared Marshall lit the lamp for his 4th goal of the season.  Less then a minute later with the Penguins on the power play Jim Koehler struck again, burying the feed from Tim Carter putting the Penguins up 2-1.  Colin Haviland would extend the lead for the Penguins when he finished a pass from Jim Koehler for his 10th goal of the season.

The scoring was opened up in the third period with Colin Haviland once again burying a pass from Jim Koehler, for his second of the game and 12th on the season. The assist was Koehler’s 4th point in the game and 30th on the season. With the Penguins up 4-1 and seemingly in control the Flames found themselves on the powerplay and Pete McCarthy figured it was perfect timing for his first goal of the season, his slap shot from the point finding the back of the net cutting the Penguins lead to two with 5:30 left to play. Exactly two minutes late the Flames would strike again, Alex Garceau skating end to end split the Pens D and fired the puck past McCaffrey for the goal, his 7th on the season. Now trailing only by one goal the Flames peppered the Penguins net with shots, out-shooting the Penguins 18-9 in the third period. But it was the Penguins who would tally the next goal, extending their lead back to two at 5-3 on Tim Carter’s unassisted goal.  The Flames pulled their goalie in the closing minutes as they desperately tried to tie the score. Filipe DaSilva capatilized on the empty net as he scored his first goal of the season, with 1:32 left to play, securing the victory for the Penguins 6-3.
