Toso’s six goals leads Maple Leafs over Penguins 8-7
February 12, 2010 by NateThe final game of Thursday night’s triple header saw the Maple Leafs taking on the Penguins in a very tight game. The Leafs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a goal from Sam Toso (assists: Kyle Stevenson, David Biele), followed by one from Tim Power (assists: Toso and Stevenson) . The Penguins got one back when Jim Koehler fired one past Leafs’ Matt Lydon with help from Colin Haviland. Toso responded by scoring his second(assists: Micheal Chateauneuf, Brian Martin) and third (assist: Justin Jones) goals of the night to put the Leafs up 4-1. However, the Penguins scored twice in the final minute of the period, the first by Colin Haviland (assist: Koehler) at 0:52 and the second scored on the power play with one second left in the period by Colin Haviland on nice nice play set up by Dave Ford and Jim Koehler, putting the Penguins within one, 4-3.
Just like the previous period, the second frame was very tightly contested. Jim Koehler tied the game up when he scored at 8:20 on a play started by Matt Casserly. The Leafs’ Toso broke the tie about a minute later when he fired his fourth of the night past Penguins’ goaltender Glenn McCaffrey from Brian Martin and Peter Obersheimer. The Penguins then took the lead on two goals in two minutes from Andrew Garnitz (assist: David Chella) and an unassisted goal from Michael Lerra. However, that lead would not last the period after Peter Obersheimer(assist: Justin Jones) knotted the game at six with 38 seconds to go in the period.
The third period saw the Penguins take the lead at 9:43 when Andrew Garnitz(assist: Michael Lerra) put one past Matt Lydon. However, Toso and the Leafs’ responded back 23 seconds later when he sniped one top shelf with a slick setup from Kyle Stevenson. The Leafs would go up for good on Toso’s sixth(assist: Kyle Stevenson) of the night with 4:32 remaining in the 3rd period, putting the final score at 8-7.
