Stevenson scores a pair as Maple Leafs down Wild 5-4…
February 9, 2010 by KenThe Maple Leafs pulled out a close one over the Wild last night in their second meeting of this young season. The winless Wild trailed 2-0 early after goals from Kyle Stevenson and Tim Gardner. Gabe Menard got the Wild on the board in the closing seconds of the first period when his slapshot from the point was tipped past Matt Lydon, the goaltender for the Maple Leafs.
Early in the second period the Maple Leafs would regain the two goal lead when Michael Chateauneuf buried a pass from Pete Obersheimer. Just over a minute later the Wild answered back as Ken Holbrook’s poke check off the stick of a Maple Leafs defenseman slipped past the Maple Leafs netminder bringing the Wild back within one at 3-2. The Wild would tie the game at 3-3 on a goal by KC Reardon. Maple Leafs forward Kyle Stevenson answered right back while killing a power play he scored his second goal of the game putting home a rebound in traffic for the shorthanded tally.
With the Maple Leafs up 4-3 early in the third period the Wild fought back to tie the game once again, Jim Keck scoring on a pass from Adam Thibault and KC Reardon. Both teams fought hard and peppered the goaltenders throughout the game, Matt Lydon making 38 saves for the Maple Leafs and Bill Notartomaso with 45 saves for the Wild. The last goal of the game would be scored by the Maple Leafs when Peter Obersheimer wins a faceoff with just over 2 minutes left to play and he danced around the Wild defense and ripped a wrist shot past the Wild goaltender. The Maple Leafs staved off the Wild’s push in the closing seconds with the net empty taking the victory 5-4.
