Koehler’s Late Goal Lifts Penguins Over Blues 5-4

February 2, 2010 by Nate

Jim Koehler’s goal with 19 seconds remaining in the 3rd was enough to put the Penguins past the Blues in a very tight game.  The Blues opened the scoring at 8:30 of the first period when Michel Boulerice did his best baseball impression by knocking the puck out of midair from the doorstep, with assists going to Joseph Perna and Alan Donaruma.  However, the lead wouldn’t last long as Jim Koehler sniped one past Dan Notartomaso off a play started by Matt Casserly at 8:16.  Just over a minute later, Koehler wired another one through a screen which found it’s way past Notartomaso to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.  The Pens went up 3-1 at 3:20 of the first when Michael Condo added to the lead with help from Ian Dargon.  The Blues began chipping away at the lead when Nate Roy put the rebound of a n Ed Kelley shot past Glenn McCaffrey at 3:49 of the first.  Michel Boulerice of the Blues was able to tie at 3-3 the game with a great individual effort for his second goal of he game, and the first period would end with that score.

The second period saw a tight defensive game where the goalies reigned supreme as nobody was able to beat either of them during the frame.  However, the 3rd period provided a bit more offense.  The Blues took the lead when Michel Boulerice completed the hat trick by tipping a point shot from Greg Hamann with the secondary assist going to Nate Roy.  That lead would hold for 10 minutes until the Penguins struck on the powerplay at 3:40 with Colin Haviland doing the honors with help from Matt Casserly and Jim Koehler.  Jim Koehler would complete the hat trick when he netted the game winner with 19 seconds to play on a nice give and go play from Colin Haviland.
