Haviland, Chella and Garnitz each score 2 as Penguins Ice Bruins, 8-6
January 22, 2010 by adminThe Penguins out-dueled the Bruins last night in a tight but high scoring contest (photos). The Bruins having a game under their belt came out firing on all cylinders. Jeff McGuire getting them on the board first less than 2 minutes in as he fired a shot past goaltender Luis Galvao, filling in for the absent Penguins starting goalie Glenn McCaffrey. This being the Penguins first game of the season a slow start was expected. But, David Chella answered the Bruins goal only 2 minutes after their score, tying the game at 1-1. Jim Koehler would give the Penguins a 2-1 lead later in the period off a great feed from captain Matt Casserly.
Both teams hit their strides in the second period, each team scoring 3 goals… the Bruins getting a pair of goals from Chris Donovon that gave them a 3-2 lead early in the period. The Penguins fired right back scoring the next 3 goals, Ian Dargon fired home his first of the season followed by Colin Haviland and Andrew Garnitz first goals of the game. But once again the Bruins clawed their way back in as Dan O’Conner scores on the powerplay to bring the Bruins back within one, trailing 5-4 heading into the third period.
Third period began with Colin Haviland putting home his second goal of the game assisted by Jim Koehler, 4 assists on the night, giving the Penguins a two goal lead once again. The Bruins not going down easy answered back yet again, Mark Moroso scoring on a great pass from Frank Plati trimming the Penguins lead back to one. The teams traded scoring chance after scoring chance when Andrew Garnitz tallied his second goal of the game putting the Penguins back up by two at 7-5. Following the pattern this game had established, the Bruins were not done, Chris Donovan would find the back of the net one more time, completing his Hat Trick and once again cutting the lead to one, setting the table for a scramble to the finish line.
In the closing minutes both teams pressed hard but the Penguins would catch the final break with the Bruins net empty and only 30 seconds to play David Chella put home his second goal of the game crushing the Bruins hopes of sending this one to OT. Final score 8-6 Penguins.
